Convention 2006Forty (roughly) Freddyites gathered in Round Top, NY, at the Winter Clove Inn for a weekend of socializing, mystery-solving, and presentations. Highlights included "Lost in Translation", Jeb Rong's analysis and commentary on the German and Chinese translations of the Freddy books, "The Perils of Anthropomorphism" by author Gloria Hatrick, and an afternoon with Diana Halpern, Brooks's stepdaughter, discussing her memories of our favorite author. For some, though, the highlight of the weekend might have been either the puppet show, "Freddy and the Aaron Doty Affair," based on parts of Freddy Plays Football, or else the mystery of the weekend, in which Freddy was captured on Friday night and clues were gradually given out over the next couple of days until he was finally found, in a box addressed for Montana, in the Inn's gazebo. More coverage will be coming both here and in the newsletter. New Brooks reprints comingOverlook Press is coming out with two Brooks reprints in the not-too-distant future. Henry's Dog Henry will be out at the end of November, while Jimmy Takes Vanishing Lessons will be released next April. Pre-order through the links given here, and the Friends of Freddy get a referral bonus! Reprint statusMaureen Nagy of Overlook Press was happy to report that all of the hardback volumes in the Freddy series are still in print, nearly ten years after Overlook reissued their first Freddy book, and there's no sign of needing to pull any of them as yet. Nine are available in paperback, and unfortunately PenguinPutnam seems to have lost interest in completing the series. The available paperbacks are Freddy Goes to Florida, Freddy Goes to the North Pole, Freddy the Detective, Freddy and the Ignormus, Freddy and the Bean Home News, Freddy Plays Football, Freddy the Pilot, and Freddy and the Spaceship. You can purchase any of these books through our online bookstore. Freddy on stageThe DreamWrights Youth and Family Theatre in York, PA, produced "Freddy the King of Detectives" for a two-week run back in April and May. About a dozen Freddy fans and family attended one of the premiere performances. Meanwhile, there is interest from other theater groups around the country in producing this play.
